Hollywood Tragedy: Was Matthew Perry’s Death Truly an Accident?

A new Peacock documentary, Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy, delves into the Friends star’s heartbreaking death in October 2023 at the age of 54.

The documentary uncovers shocking details about Perry’s final days, revealing that he received 27 ketamine injections before his passing. His death was ultimately ruled as an accident caused by the acute effects of ketamine, leading to drowning. U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada, who led the investigation, pointed to the involvement of multiple individuals—including two doctors, Perry’s live-in assistant, and a drug supplier—who allegedly contributed to his excessive ketamine intake.

Directed by Robert Palumbo, the film highlights Perry’s long battle with addiction and those around him who may have enabled it. Estrada specifically calls out Dr. Salvador Plasencia, claiming he exploited the situation for financial gain. The documentary also covers the five arrests made during the investigation, with charges filed against Plasencia and Jasveen Sangha, dubbed the “Ketamine Queen.” Both are expected to face trial in 2025.

Perry’s assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges related to the distribution of ketamine resulting in death. The documentary recounts Perry’s final hours, including his repeated requests for ketamine and the moment Iwamasa found him unresponsive in a hot tub.

Despite its in-depth coverage, Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy does not include interviews with his Friends co-stars—David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, and Matt LeBlanc—who are reportedly still mourning their beloved friend.

The documentary premiered on Peacock on February 25, 2025.
