Lahore: The excitement for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 reached new heights as cricketing legends, officials, and passionate fans gathered at Lahore Fort for a spectacular curtain-raiser event. The celebration blended the essence of cricket with Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage, marking the official commencement of the highly anticipated tournament.

The first match of the Champions Trophy is set for February 19 at Karachi’s National Bank Cricket Stadium, where hosts Pakistan will take on New Zealand. Over the course of 19 days, fans can expect thrilling encounters between the world’s top cricketing nations.

The grand opening took place in the historic Diwan-e-Aam, with a special tribute to Pakistan’s victorious 2017 Champions Trophy squad. Music icon Atif Aslam energized the crowd with a powerful performance of the tournament’s official anthem.

Adding to the spectacle, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) delivered a breathtaking fly-past, elevating the patriotic spirit of the event. The venue itself was adorned with artistic displays celebrating Pakistan’s sporting and cultural legacy.

The ceremony was graced by notable personalities, including Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan, Punjab Sports Minister Faisal Ayub Khokhar, ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice, and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Other key figures such as PCB advisers Aamir Mir and Wahab Riaz, Chief Selector Asad Shafiq, former South African cricketer JP Duminy, and New Zealand pacer Tim Southee were also in attendance.

Excitement for a Historic Tournament

During his address, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the significance of hosting such a major ICC event in Pakistan. He highlighted the enthusiasm surrounding the tournament, particularly among a generation that has long awaited such global cricketing action on home soil. The competition officially begins with the Pakistan vs. New Zealand match, but one of the most anticipated fixtures of the tournament is the Pakistan-India clash in Dubai on February 23. Given the large Pakistani and Indian expatriate communities in the UAE, the match is expected to draw a massive crowd.

Fans in Dubai have already begun making plans to watch the matches together. “We are organizing a big gathering at Dubai Sports City to support our team,” shared an overseas Pakistani. “This tournament will be unforgettable!”

Similarly, in Rawalpindi, long-time cricket fans are gearing up for the tournament. “I’ve followed Pakistan cricket since childhood, and this event is going to be a true test of our team’s strength,” said a local resident, confident that Pakistan will make its mark.

Tickets and Tournament Format

The PCB is expecting packed stadiums for the matches and has urged fans to buy tickets online to avoid last-minute issues. “There is a high demand for tickets, and we encourage fans to secure their spots early,” stated a PCB spokesperson.

He also praised the government’s efforts in making international cricket possible in Pakistan again. “Improved security and a welcoming environment have played a key role in bringing major events back to the country.”
