Lebanese PM Announces New Government, Pledges Reforms

BEIRUT:

Lebanon’s Prime Minister announced a new government on Saturday, marking the end of over two years of caretaker rule, as Hezbollah’s influence wanes following a conflict with Israel, according to the presidency.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam expressed his aspiration to lead a “government of reform and recovery,” emphasizing the need to restore confidence with the international community after prolonged economic turmoil attributed to corruption and mismanagement.

The newly formed government faces significant challenges, including implementing critical reforms to secure international financial assistance, managing a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, and overseeing the nation’s reconstruction efforts.

“I hope this administration will bring reform and recovery,” Salam stated in a televised address shortly after the cabinet was revealed. He reaffirmed his commitment to “rebuilding trust between citizens and the government, Lebanon and its Arab allies, as well as Lebanon and the global community.”
