OREBRO, SWEDEN:
A shooting at an adult education center in Orebro, Sweden, resulted in the deaths of around 10 people on Tuesday, marking the deadliest attack in the country’s history. Swedish police confirmed the incident, with local authorities stating that the gunman was believed to be among the deceased. A search of the school continues to ensure no other victims remain. The gunman’s motive remains unclear.
Local police chief Roberto Eid Forest said, “We know that approximately 10 people have been killed, but due to the scale of the incident, we can’t provide more precise details yet.” Authorities are investigating the situation, including interviews with witnesses and gathering evidence to build a profile of the attacker. At this time, terrorism is not believed to be the motive.
The attack took place at Risbergska School, an institution that helps adults complete their education or pursue higher studies. It is located about 200 km west of Stockholm and is part of a campus with schools for children.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the tragedy as a “painful day” for Sweden and the deadliest mass shooting in the country’s history. King Carl XVI Gustaf and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also expressed their condolences.
Maria Pegado, a teacher at the school, recounted the moments following the shooting, where a person burst into her classroom after lunch break, urging everyone to evacuate immediately.
