Serbian Prime Minister Resigns Amid Nationwide Protests

BELGRADE:Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic announced his resignation on Tuesday, making him the highest-ranking official to step down in response to widespread anti-corruption protests across the country. The demonstrations were ignited by the deadly collapse of a roof at a railway station in Novi Sad, which claimed the lives of 15 people and sparked public outcry, with many calling for Vucevic’s resignation.

What initially began as small protests in Novi Sad quickly grew, spreading to the capital, Belgrade, as thousands of students, teachers, and workers joined the rallies. They voiced their anger over the incident and blamed it on corruption within the government of President Aleksandar Vucic.

In the wake of the tragedy, Serbia’s ministers for construction, transportation, and infrastructure, as well as the trade minister, had already resigned. However, these steps did not quell the ongoing protests.

Speaking at a press conference, Vucevic explained that he had decided to resign to help ease tensions. “This decision is made to calm the situation,” he said. He also confirmed that the mayor of Novi Sad would step down as well, stating that their resignation would fulfill the demands of the most vocal protesters.
