UN reports 70 deaths in attack on hospital in western Sudan

The United Nations reported on Sunday that an attack on a hospital in El-Fasher, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur region, has left 70 people dead, including patients in critical care. The assault, attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), targeted the only operational hospital in the area, marking a grave violation of international humanitarian law, according to UN official Clementine Nkweta-Salami.

The RSF’s drone attack, which occurred on Friday evening, destroyed the hospital’s emergency unit. The ongoing conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023 between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, has caused widespread devastation. Most hospitals in conflict zones are now out of service, with up to 80% affected.

World Health Organization head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus condemned the attack, emphasizing that the hospital was filled with patients at the time. Saudi Arabia also denounced the strike, calling for greater protection of medical and humanitarian personnel. The war has already claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced millions, and exacerbated the country’s humanitarian crisis.
