In the 2024 documentary Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story, the late Allan Lazare shared a deeply personal reflection about his longtime friend, Liza Minnelli, revealing what he believed to be her greatest life regret.
Lazare, who passed away in 2024, discussed Minnelli’s emotional challenges, including the heartbreak of multiple miscarriages. He shared that if she had to choose one disappointment in her life, it would be not becoming a mother. “She would have been a great mother,” he said, highlighting her nurturing nature and the love she had for children. He added that she had so much to offer as a mother, citing her warmth and kindness toward his own children.
Throughout her life, Minnelli faced personal losses, including the grief of three miscarriages. Despite her four marriages and divorces, she was never able to fulfill her dream of motherhood.
In the documentary, Lazare also reflected on the close connection Minnelli shared with his family, especially his daughter Lauren. He fondly recalled a photograph of Minnelli embracing his young daughter around a Christmas tree, which was taken again 35 years later, with Lauren’s own child in the same setting.
Lazare’s wife, Arlene, also spoke about the impact Minnelli had on their daughter. She remembered teaching their young daughter how to perform Minnelli’s iconic song, Liza with a Z. “Our daughter was so proud to sing it,” Lazare shared, noting how she performed it for everyone.
The documentary offers an intimate look at Minnelli’s struggles and deep relationships, illustrating her lasting influence as not only a legendary performer but also a beloved friend and mentor.
