Gloria Romero, affectionately called the “Queen of Philippine Cinema,” passed away peacefully on Saturday at the age of 91.
Her daughter, Maritess Gutierrez, announced the sad news through an emotional post on social media.
“With deep sorrow, I share the passing of my beloved mother, Gloria Galla Gutierrez, also known as Gloria Romero. She peacefully joined our Creator earlier today,” Gutierrez wrote. She extended her gratitude for the public’s prayers, support, and condolences, adding, “Her presence will be deeply missed.”
Born as Gloria Borrego Galla, Romero began her acting journey at just 16, during the golden age of Philippine cinema. She gained fame for her roles in classics such as Cofradia, Pilya, Despachadora, and Dalagang Ilocana, which earned her a FAMAS Best Actress award. As her career progressed, she continued to shine with acclaimed performances in films like Bilangin Ang Bituin Sa Langit alongside Nora Aunor, as well as in Tanging Yaman, Magnifico, and Rainbow Sunset.
Romero’s talent also extended to television, where she brought to life memorable characters such as Minerva Chavez in Palibhasa Lalake and Doña Amparo in Familia Zaragoza. Her final role was as Lola Goreng in Daig Kayo Ng Lola Ko.
To honor her memory, a public viewing will take place at Arlington Memorial Chapel in Quezon City on Monday and Tuesday, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
