JENIN, PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES:
The Israeli military launched an operation in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on Tuesday. According to the Palestinian health ministry in Ramallah, the operation resulted in the deaths of eight Palestinians, coming just days after a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that seven individuals were treated for injuries caused by live ammunition, but noted that Israeli forces were obstructing their efforts to access the area.
Jenin’s governor, Kamal Abu al-Rub, described the operation as “an invasion of the refugee camp,” stating that Apache helicopters were in the sky and Israeli military vehicles were spread throughout the area.
Anwar Rajab, a spokesperson for the Palestinian security forces, said that Israeli forces opened fire on both civilians and security personnel, injuring several civilians and leaving one security officer in critical condition.
In a separate development, Israel’s army chief, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, resigned on Tuesday, taking responsibility for the failure to prevent the Hamas attack on October 7. In his resignation letter, Halevi acknowledged his accountability for the military’s shortcomings during the attack but also mentioned the ongoing “significant successes” of the military.
