Smith, Labuschagne, Khawaja Discuss BBL Restrictions; Bowlers and Head Excluded

Steven Smith will play three games in the Big Bash League (BBL) before the Sri Lanka tour, while Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja are only available for one game. This decision comes after negotiations between Cricket Australia’s high-performance team and the BBL. Travis Head and Australia’s bowlers, including Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Nathan Lyon, will rest before heading overseas.

Alex Carey, Sam Konstas, Beau Webster, Mitchell Marsh, and Jhye Richardson have been cleared to play in the remainder of the BBL. However, Head, along with the Australian bowlers, will not participate in any BBL games, as they are preparing for the Sri Lanka tour. This tour is expected to be announced shortly, with the squad departing for a pre-tour camp in the UAE on January 19 or 20.

Cummins might miss the Sri Lanka tour due to the birth of his second child, and Lyon is being rested ahead of the tests in Sri Lanka. Labuschagne and Khawaja will only feature for the Brisbane Heat on January 16 and will miss the final games in Melbourne. The availability of other players like Carey and Webster varies, with some scheduled to play in later matches.

Cricket Australia’s approach has been to allow some players to play in the BBL while ensuring others get sufficient rest to prepare for upcoming international commitments, including the Sri Lanka tour and ICC Champions Trophy. The BBL is excited to have some Test stars participating in the competition over the next two weeks.
