Ongoing Protests Over Canal Construction

Nationalist Leaders Oppose Corporate Farming in Sindh

HYDERABAD: Nationalist leaders have voiced strong opposition to the federal government’s plan to allocate 52,000 acres of land in Umerkot district for corporate farming under the Green Pakistan Initiative.

During a meeting of the Sindh Rehbar Committee in Hyderabad on Sunday, chaired by Aslam Khairpuri, leaders condemned the move, describing it as a “conspiracy to occupy Sindh’s land.” They criticized the Sindh government, led by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), for its alleged complicity in the plan.

The leaders argued that even if the land in question is barren and government-owned, it should be distributed among local poor farmers rather than handed over to private companies.

“In the guise of progress, Sindh’s land, water, lakes, mountains, recreational spots, and even heritage sites are being taken away,” the committee stated.

Prominent participants, including Jeay Sindh Mahaz leader Riaz Ali Chandio, Jeay Sindh Qaumi Party Chairman Nawaz Khan Zaunr, and Jeay Sindh Tehreek Chairman Soriya Sindhi, resolved to launch a peaceful political movement against what they termed the corporatization of Sindh’s resources.

Protest Against New Canals

Separately, Qomi Awami Tehreek leader Ayaz Latif Palijo led a rally from Hala in Matiari district to Shahdadpur in Sanghar district on Sunday. The rally was part of his campaign against the construction of six new canals on the Indus River.

Nationalist leaders vowed to continue their struggle to protect Sindh’s natural resources and ensure their fair distribution among the province’s people.
