Musk asserts his growing right-wing influence in Europe

Elon Musk has been intensifying his support for hard-right politics in Europe, making bold interventions that challenge the political status quo. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, also the owner of social media platform X, has increasingly voiced support for far-right leaders and movements across the continent, leveraging his influence to shape political discourse.

In the UK, Musk has called for new elections, criticized Prime Minister Keir Starmer over his past role in a child grooming scandal, and voiced support for controversial figures such as extremist Tommy Robinson. Additionally, Musk has aligned himself with the anti-immigration Reform UK party and former Prime Minister Liz Truss’s stance on cutting state funding to the BBC. His comments have sparked reactions, including a rebuke from Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who called Musk’s remarks “misinformed” but still expressed willingness to collaborate with him.

Musk’s influence extends beyond the UK, with meetings and support for figures like Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, German far-right party AfD, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. His political views appear to align with his business interests, as he supports authoritarian policies that could streamline operations and minimize government interference.

He has also criticized the European Union’s regulatory efforts, particularly regarding the EU’s crackdown on disinformation, accusing the European Commission of being undemocratic. His strong influence on X, along with his political connections, has raised concerns about his ability to mobilize far-right parties and citizens, potentially increasing pressure on EU decision-makers.

Experts suggest that Musk’s political interventions are driven by his neoliberal economic interests, favoring systems that minimize government regulation and political opposition, while benefiting his business ventures.
