Today marks the 97th birth anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the former prime minister and founder of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), with tributes pouring in from across the country to honor his lasting impact.
President Asif Ali Zardari praised Bhutto as a visionary leader who reshaped Pakistan’s future. “He was a statesman of exceptional intellect, courage, and charisma. His legacy continues to inspire the nation,” Zardari stated.
Zardari emphasized Bhutto’s pivotal contributions to Pakistan, particularly his role in drafting the 1973 Constitution, which established a parliamentary, democratic, and federal system of governance. Bhutto’s leadership also initiated Pakistan’s nuclear program, a crucial step for the nation’s sovereignty and security.
Additionally, Zardari acknowledged Bhutto’s dedication to improving the lives of the underprivileged. His land reforms, labor rights measures, and creation of major public-sector enterprises offered dignity and opportunities to millions. Bhutto’s educational initiatives, such as founding Allama Iqbal Open University and focusing on technical education, helped make knowledge more accessible.
“Bhutto’s economic and social reforms transformed lives and laid the groundwork for progress and development,” Zardari added.
“His sacrifice turned him into a symbol of resistance and resilience,” Zardari noted, stressing that Bhutto’s vision of a progressive and inclusive Pakistan remains relevant today.
In observance of the anniversary, the PPP has organized various events, including floral tributes at Bhutto’s grave and special prayers. Party leaders and supporters have praised Bhutto’s role in empowering citizens with the right to vote and shaping the nation’s destiny.
Born on January 5, 1928, Bhutto received education at esteemed institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley, and Oxford University. He entered politics as the youngest minister in Ayub Khan’s cabinet and later founded the PPP in 1967.
