PORT SUDAN:
A Sudanese military transport aircraft crashed into a residential area on the outskirts of Khartoum, killing 46 people, the regional government confirmed on Wednesday.
The Antonov plane went down on Tuesday night near Wadi Seidna air base, a key military facility in Omdurman, northwest of the capital. According to the Sudanese army, which has been engaged in conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, the aircraft crashed during takeoff, resulting in casualties among both military personnel and civilians.
“Following a final assessment, the death toll has reached 46, with 10 others injured,” the Khartoum regional government’s media office stated.
Earlier, the army-affiliated health ministry had reported at least 19 fatalities.
Eyewitnesses recounted hearing a powerful explosion and seeing multiple homes damaged in the impacted neighborhood. The crash also led to widespread power outages in the surrounding areas.
Emergency responders swiftly transported injured civilians, including children, to a nearby hospital for treatment.
